In a new twist in the case where the Supreme Court is contemplating measures to end violence by 'cow vigilantes', two Muslim 'gau rakshaks' have filed
a petition calling lynchings an attempt to malign real cow protectors. Banning cow vigilantes will disrupt the work being undertaken by them to curb illegal
cow smuggling and meat trade. Urging the bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak, to not impose a blanket ban on cow vigilantism, Mohammad Faiz Khan from
Raipur and Israr Ullah from Allahabad said activists across the country working within the framework of the law for the protection of cows and calves
and everyone should not be painted with the same brush. Pointing out that 'cow vigilantism' was a legal act, their lawyer Archana Pathak Dave said Article
48 of the Constitution prohibited the slaughter, of cows and calves and other milch and draught cattle. Such a vigil was also essential for proper implementation
of the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals rules, she said. They also claimed, "The incidents of violence perpetrated by the meat mafias
are in larger number compared to the incidents of mob violence disclosed in the petition seeking action against cow vigilantes." "The silence of the present
writ petition on these instances ominously condescends the lives of innocent villagers, brave BSF officers and police personnel and compassionate civil
society members who have suffered fatal injuries, mental trauma, and death at the hands of an armed meat mafia which practices brutality indiscriminately
